University Medical Centre at Princeton -Chapel of light

“Evidence-based design was at the heart of RMJM’s innovative design for the new hospital. Every aspect of the hospital’s design was geared toward creating a healing and welcoming atmosphere for patients, families and hospital staff. Elements include the abundant use of natural light”-rmjm.com

Based on the concept of divine light, the designers used light as a central unifying theme in the design—the materials and features were all chosen to bring out different aspects of light. The floor of the chapel features terrazzo interactive tiles, which not only responded to the patrons’ every step but were also activated by the filtered colors of light that shines down upon them from the clerestory above. The effortless and magical movement of light and shadow within the flooring is really highlighted in this solemn space and speaks directly of the ethereal and mystical aspects of light and how we perceive it.

An Elegant design and execution by Czarnowski captures the essence of the iconic luxury brand, Cadillac in the 2015 North American International Auto Show. The newest Cadillac model was displayed on a boldly sophisticated floor of Jali Cascata surrounding a circular core of Scintilla. Cascata panels were also inset into the steps leading up to the car and on the floor of the hostess stand.

The luxuriously shimmering floor received foot traffic of millions of visitors and proudly presented the dozens of cars parked on it.

Back-lit Terrazzo Tiles

Back-lit Terrazzo Tiles

The in-floor video display for this Ralph Applebaum Associates design utilizes modular tiles mounted to an access floor system with video LED boards underneath. The integral light points in the slabs transmit video projection through the floor, creating a video display flooring system. A rippling pattern emerges unexpectedly in the stone-like floor when someone steps it.

Pavers

Interactive Exterior Terrazzo Pavers are activated by ambient light, shadow and movement. The experiential effect of these materials is aptly described by Zaha Hadid Architects in a press releases that was issued for the design concept for the “street element” of Boulevard Der Stars, “Sensitile Terrazzo pavers incorporate passive and active light conducting channels. They draw on the interactive qualities by the simple means of natural or artificial ambient light without the need for electricity. Ruled by simple low tech principle this new material , we found, could provide joy and play on the street , and the existing static opaque floor would dress by an animated surface during the day and transform to a glitzy radiant source of light at night time”.
